Green: Not Just for Holiday Inn Signs Anymore!

April 23, 2009 · Leave a Comment

We are working with our conference venue to keep one another informed about green-event initiatives and goals.

Current green practices at the Holiday Inn Select Executive Center:

  • Hotel offices recycle paper and use recycled paper.
  • In coordination with Civic Recycling and conference planners, recycling bins for paper and for drink containers can be placed in the entry foyer area for the duration of the conference.
  • Guests staying more than one night have the option of reusing linens instead of requiring them to be washed nightly.
  • Guest rooms have their own thermostats which are set by default to “fan” and can be controlled by guests.
  • Coffee served at the hotel is 30% Rainforest Alliance certified content.

In the works:

  • Compact fluorescent light bulbs have been purchased and are in the process of being installed.
  • The hotel is aware of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources and  Missouri Hotel and Lodging Association’s Green Hotel Certification program and are moving toward meeting certification.

Implications for MLA Conference planning:

  • We’ll stay in communication with the venue about recycling bin setup.
  • We’ll be able to include some individual-responsibility steps in areas that guests control in a voluntary Green Conference Pledge similar to this one used at the 2009 meetings of the Association of College & Research Libraries in Seattle.
